Hogan Personality Assessments

Hogan Dark Side Personality Test

Hogan Personality Assessments are trusted by 75% of Fortune 500 companies, Hogan personality assessments offer a suite of tools that help leaders increase their self-awareness and leadership effectiveness. These include insights into normal personality, derailment characteristics that emerge when under stress and pressure, and the core motives and values that drive people in their work.

The Hogan Insights Report gives you three detailed reports in one:

The Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) reports normal, everyday personality; termed the bright-side personality – qualities that describe how we relate to others when we are at our best. The HPI is different from many other personality tools as it was developed exclusively based on research involving working adults. It describes your performance in the workplace, how you manage stress, interact with others, approach tasks, and solve problems. Assessed against seven scales, the report identifies strengths and areas for development.

The Hogan Personality Inventory reports on the following 7 primary scales:

  1. Adjustment – the ability to handle stress, manage emotions, and listen to feedback.
  2. Ambition – leadership, drive, competitiveness, and initiative.
  3. Sociability – a person’s interest in frequent and varied social interaction.
  4. Interpersonal Sensitivity – charm, tact, and social skills.
  5. Prudence – self-control, conscientiousness, and work ethic.
  6. Inquisitive – curiosity, creativity, and openness to experience and ideas.
  7. Learning Approach – learning style and/or preferred method for acquiring new knowledge.

The HPI also reports on the following 6 occupational scales:

  1. Service Orientation – treating customers in a courteous and helpful manner.
  2. Stress Tolerance – handling stress, pressure, and heavy workloads.
  3. Reliability – a willingness to follow rules and respect corporate values in the workplace.
  4. Clerical Potential – a talent for clerical and administrative responsibilities.
  5. Sales Potential – a talent for sales.
  6. Managerial Potential – a talent for building and maintaining effective teams.

The Hogan Development Survey (HDS) describes the dark side of personalityqualities that emerge when we are stressed, bored or tired, and that can disrupt relationships, damage reputations, and derail your chances of success.

The HDS Insight Report evaluates 11 forms of interpersonal behaviour that, when overdone, can cause problems at work and in life. The HDS Insight Report helps you understand your limitations and build your self-awareness to mitigate performance risks before they become a problem.

Where can I take the Hogan Personality Assessments?

You can take the official Hogan Personality Assessments here, including the MVPI, HPI & HDS.

What is the difference between HPI, HDS and MVPI?

The HPI focuses on day-to-day workplace personality, or the “bright side.” The HDS focuses on behaviours that can emerge under stress or pressure and affect performance or relationships. The MVPI focuses on what motivates a person, including the values and interests that shape what they want from work and life.

Can Hogan be used for recruitment and hiring?

Yes. Hogan is commonly used in recruitment and selection to provide deeper insight into likely workplace behaviour, strengths, risks and motivational fit. Hogan positions its assessments for talent acquisition and development, and your current page also highlights recruitment and assessment of new hires as a key use case. Contact us if you are interested in using Hogan for this purpose.

How long does the Hogan assessment take?

Each questionnaire takes between 20 to 30 minutes to complete. Budget around 60-90 minutes to complete all three. Try to complete them all in one sitting, when you are focused and relaxed.

Can you fail the Hogan personality assessment?

No. The Hogan personality assessment is not an exam, so there is no pass or fail. It is designed to help identify strengths, risks and motivators, and the results are best interpreted in context rather than judged as simply good or bad. So, answer honestly and as you are – not as you would like to be or as you think you should be. There are built-in measures to identify unusual or atypical responses.
