What is the Planks Game?
The Planks team building game is a high-performance team activity suitable for many learning and development interventions, including:
- leadership development
- continuous improvement training
- exploring high-performance in teams
- selection and assessment
- general team building
- reviewing and debriefing
The task brief is simple – to develop a fast and reliable assembly process/method for the components given. To be successful, teams must engage in a number of effective team behaviors, specifically:
- problem-solving, collaborating, and aligning
- delegating, supporting, and coaching
- clear leadership
- assigning clear roles and responsibilities
- reviewing and debriefing team performance
- the sharing of learning and mistakes
Ideal group size: 6-8 people plus any observers. For larger groups, we recommend having multiple units/builds at the same time. This can add an element of inter-team competition or collaboration, creating high levels of energy and a rich learn experience for the debrief.
The Planks activity comes in two sizes:
- Standard (4kg)- ideal for construction on either the floor or large tables. The longest piece is 96cm.
- Travel-light (2kg) – ideal for the traveling trainer and construction on smaller tables. The longest piece is 48cm.
